A top Pakistani government official says the army has joined the gunbattle against the attackers of a police academy in the country's east.

Punjab province Gov. Salman Taseer says an army brigade has "laid a complete siege" to the police compound where the gunmen are still believed holed up.

At least 11 police officers are said to have been killed in Monday's attack on the compound by the heavily armed gunmen.

The assault underscored the threat posed by militants to Pakistan's stability.
